Ganesh Utsav Celebrations in Vadodara | Photos

 Happy Ganesh Utsav!

Ganesh Utsav or Ganesh Chaturthi is one of the most popular Hindu festival of India. Ganesh Utsav marks the birthday of Lord Ganesha, son of Shiva & Parvati who is the God of good fortune, prosperity, wisdom, knowledge & remover of obstacles.

Every year the festival falls around late August – early September and it is observed in the Hindu calendar month of Bhaadrapada, starting on the shukla chaturthi (fourth day of the waxing moon period). This year Ganesh Utsav falls on 19th September, 2012.

Ganesh Utsav is celebrated with great devotion & enthusiasm all over the state of India. Friends, below are the photos of Ganesh Utsav Celebrations & Ganpati decorations in Vadodara. Lets take a look!

Most popular legend about the birth of Lord Ganesha is that Parvati is said to have created him from clay to protect her unknown to her husband, Lord Shiva. As Ganesha sits on guard at his mother’s home, Lord Shiva comes home but is not allowed in by Ganesha. In a fit of anger, Shiva chops of Ganesha’s head. When goddess Parvati learns of her son’s loss, she is distraught and demands her husband bring her son back to life. The lord orders his men to find any sleeping being with a head facing north. His men see an elephant and instantly do as instructed. Thus is Ganesh reborn, but this time with the head of an elephant.

Ganesha Utsav is celebrated over a period of 10 or 12 days. The festival begins with the placing of beautifully crafted Ganesha idols in homes or grand Pandals and for 10 days these Ganesha idols are worshipped with full faith. Ganesha Aarti is to be done at morning & evening regularly, prasad of Modak is placed before the Ganesha Murti and then Modak Prasad is distributed among the devotees who are present in Ganesh Puja.

On the last day of Ganesh Utsav i.e on Anant Chaturdashi (fourteenth day of the waxing moon period) or Ganesha Visarjan, these Ganesha idols are taken in a procession for visarjan or immersion, to the nearby river, lake or sea.

As the idols are immersed in water, it is believed that any misfortunes that may afflict the family are also washed away. This year Ananta Chaturdasi is on September 29, 2012.
